Sweater Weather 10K & 5K – Frequently Asked Questions

When and where does the race happen?

Mark your calendars for a crunchy, cozy autumn morning! The 2026 edition of the Sweater Weather 10K & 5K kicks off at 10 am, Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the gorgeous Canmore Nordic Centre Stadium (right behind the Main Lodge) at 1988 Olympic Way, Canmore, Alberta. Get ready to run, laugh, and snack under the golden alpine trees!

When is race package pickup?

You can pick up your race package either on Friday, October 2nd or the morning of Saturday, October 3rd:

Friday, October 2nd: Swing by Big Bear Trading Company in downtown Canmore (837 8 St, Canmore, AB T1W 2B3) from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM to pick up your race bib and swag.

Saturday, October 3rd: Come by the Canmore Nordic Centre Stadium (outside right behind the Main Lodge) Saturday morning before the race between 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM to pick up your race bib, swag, and timing chip.

When does race registration close?

Don’t get “leaf” behind! Registration closes at midnight on September 26th (if we don't sell out before that). Early bird pricing is available until June 1st.

What are the race distances?

Choose your cozy adventure: the 5K for those who like their runs just as snug as their sweaters, or the 10K for extra leaf-crunching mileage. Both courses wind through stunning mountain forest double-track dirt trails and have a good dose of elevation (we are in the mountains, after all).

Is a sweater required?

Only in our hearts! Sweaters are highly encouraged but not mandatory. But really, wouldn’t you want to be part of the best-dressed race in Canmore and be eligible for the "best sweater" contest prizes from Big Bear Trading Company

What is the age requirement for participants?

All ages are welcome - if you’re old enough to pick out a sweater, you’re old enough to race!

Are strollers allowed on course?

Due to the nature of the trails the course follows and with safety being our top priority, we are not able to accommodate strollers on course.

Where can I park?

Parking is available at the Canmore Nordic Centre, but don’t forget your Kananaskis Conservation Pass! Grab yours online here before race day.

Will there be aid stations on course?

An aid station stocked with snacks, water, and an electrolyte-drink will meet you at the 3.5 km mark for the 5K and the 3.5 km and 7.5 km mark for the 10K.

Will there be post race food?

Absolutely! Thanks to our friends at JK Bakery Cafe, freshly baked pie will be waiting for you at the finish line, along with warm drinks. Hydrate, refuel, and enjoy a sweet slice of pie (or maybe even seconds, if you’re lucky!).

Do I need to carry bear spray?

Safety first in the Rockies! Bear spray is required for all runners 18 years and older - this is a Canmore Nordic Centre rule. We’ll check at the start, and if you’re not prepared, you’ll have to cheer from the sidelines.

For runners under 18 years it is up to your parental guardian's discretion of whether you carry bear spray.

Is the course beginner-friendly?

Whether you’re a first-timer, a family, or a seasoned sweater sprinter, our double-track dirt trail courses are welcoming for all looking to have a trail adventure. There are some respectable hills on the course (we are in the mountains after all) but these can always be walked (which we whole-heartedly encourage)! Come for the cardio, stay for the pie.

Can I volunteer?

Yes, please! Want pie and good vibes without the running? Volunteer! Help us cheer, serve snacks, or just make the day extra cozy. Sign up here and be part of the Sweater Weather magic.

Can I bring my dog?

Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome to cheer you on from the sidelines at the Nordic Centre! Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on course.

Are spectators allowed?

Bring your fan club! Spectators are encouraged to join the fun, snap photos, and cheer you to the finish (extra credit for fall-themed signs).

What’s your cancellation/refund policy?

Race entries are non-refundable, but we’ll help you out: transfers to another runner or deferrals to next year are possible if you email us at rnestendurance@gmail.com before September 15th, 2026. Life happens - we get it!

What happens if I litter?

Leave no trace! If you’re caught littering, you’ll be gently (but firmly) disqualified. Let’s keep our gorgeous trails sweater weather–worthy.

Will there be finish line medals?

If you love a little extra shine at the end of your run, we’ve got you covered! When you register, you can opt in for a finish medal for just a bit extra. It’s the perfect way to proudly say, “I conquered Sweater Weather!” (and it looks great in post-race selfies).

Will there be any swag?

Absolutely! Sweater Weather is all about celebrating those comfy fall vibes. Every registered runner will get a cozy race-day goodie to mark the moment. It’s our way of saying thanks for joining the fun - and giving you something to remember your run by.

Is there a best sweater contest?

Absolutely! Show up in your most fabulous, ridiculous, or pumpkin-adorned sweater and you might just earn bragging rights (and maybe even a prize from Big Bear Trading Company) from our panel of highly fashionable, possibly imaginary judges.

Do I need to bring my own pie?

Nope - your entry includes finish-line pie from JK Bakery and warm drinks. Save your baking skills for impressing your friends and family at home.

What should I wear besides a sweater? What if it’s cold, rainy, or even snowy?

This is Alberta in October - anything’s possible! The race goes on, rain, shine, or flurries (unless conditions become unsafe). Dress for adventure, and remember: there’s no bad weather, just bad sweater choices.

Dress for fall fun - think layers, comfortable running gear, and shoes that can handle a bit of crunch. Gloves, scarves, and toques are also welcome (and often necessary for full autumn effect). Make sure you check the weather report before you head out!

Can I walk the course?

Of course! This event is for runners, walkers, and anyone who just wants to enjoy the trails, snacks, and sweater fashion. Go at your own pace and soak in the scenery. The race does have a 2.5 hour cut off, so just keep that in mind when you're selecting your distance.

Are there awards for top finishers?

We celebrate everyone’s inner champion, but for those who love a little competition, overall winners will earn a special shout-out - plus, everyone gets to brag about their sweater (and their pie consumption).

Are headphones allowed?

For safety reasons, headphones are not allowed - instead enjoy the sound of leaves crunching underfoot - and the occasional “nice sweater!” shout.

What happens if I need medical help on course?

Medical staff will be on site and stationed along the route as well as volunteers. If you need assistance, let a volunteer or medical personnel know immediately.
